Android Free Software Repository

One of the things to dislike about Android Market is, it is too difficult to find out for what license the free of charge software is available, and there is no option to filter proprietary software.

Yesterday, I came across a great free software portal or repository for Andriod phones and tablets. It can replace Android Market. If you want to exclusively use free software on your smart phone, you should know Android Market is not free software, even though Google claims that the Android operating system is. A free software operating system should not ship with non-free components.

The application is called FDroid and can be installed from the web http://f-droid.org/FDroid.apkpage f-droid.org or by scanning the QR-code on the right. You need to allow installing of software not received from Android Market to be able to install it.

There are lots of quality free software available on FDroid, everything from free car navigation systems, web browsers, file managers, SIP VoIP phones, media players, games and more.

However, being capable of replacing Android Market, it can run as a separate program and provide you with an alternative software source with only free and open source software.

If you want to know more about why you should not use Android Market, read the excellent article Android Market has DRM too by Brett Smith of the Free Software Foundation.
